Abstract
This short writing represents the summary of my speech during a conference on Mandeville, held at the State University of Milan in December 2022.
This paper aims to deepen the interesting correlation identified by professor Simonazzi (professor of political philosophy at UNIMI) between the loss of Self-liking and the symptomatology of melancholy in Mandeville.
Simonazzi proposes this interesting parallelism through a careful reading of the the Fable of the bees part I (1724)1 and II (1729), the Enquiry into the origin of honour (1732) and A Treatise of the Hypochondriack and Hysterick Diseases of Mandeville, exposed in two different Simonazzi’s work: in his 2011 text Mandeville and in the 2016 article Bernard Mandeville on hypochondria and self-liking.
